Equine Assisted Personal Growth & Learning

“Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
-Emerson

Inner Trails provides individuals, families and groups impactful horse-assisted activities designed to inspire personal growth and self-discovery.

Equine assisted growth and learning is a powerful and effective approach that has an incredible impact on individuals, youth, families, and groups. It can transform a variety of issues participants haven’t been able to move through, nor heal with other modalities, including behavioral issues, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, group dynamics and communication skills.

This approach has been compared to other outdoor experiential therapies, including ropes courses, zip-lines and other outdoor adventure experiences used by therapists, treatment facilities, and human development courses around the world.

“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man”

-Winston Churchill

How Does It Work

Participants are assigned a task to accomplish individually or with a group and horses. They are given a couple of rules but for the most part they are fully empowered and responsible for deciding how to complete the task. Often during our sessions, participants do not yet realize that profound change is actually occurring. The activities are fun, they challenge people to problem solve and empower them to explore a variety of approaches which often force them out of their comfort zone.

At the conclusion of the activity we discuss their experience and there are often AH-HA moments when participants describe the horses behavior/response and relate the same feelings or experience to their own behaviors in the work place.

This form of self discovery is particularly powerful because no one told them how to accomplish the task, so all of the decisions about how to approach the challenge and their behaviors during the activity were not guided by outside influence, but rather by themselves. Thus, we remove the concept that they had no choice based on the direction provided, and by having them partner with a horse instead of a human we remove the possibility that their partner has some hidden agenda or motive. Removing some of these typical patterns of blame leads participants to more readily recognize and take ownership of their behaviors.

There is no horse experience necessary as this program is not about horsemanship. We offer a unique, challenging, and often fun form of experiential learning and self discovery.

Why use horses for human training?

Horses mirror human behaviors and give immediate and honest non-verbal feedback. This experience helps humans become more aware of how we behave and what we need to change in order to achieve improved partnerships and exceed our goals.

Horses have as many individual personalities, physical abilities and limitations as the humans they are working with. Horses don’t lie and they know your real emotions, so they recognize incongruence between behavior and emotion, revealing what is really going on within individuals or teams.

Their sensitivity to nonverbal stimulus gives them an amazing ability to read people and reflect these emotional states offering observable and physical feedback. They offer unconditional reactions to your emotions.

As social animals they provide valuable insight into our own inner dynamics.
